The possibilities with Flow Fields are endless they can be mixed and layered to truly push directed particle effects to the next level.
OpenVDB
This latest release, introduces industry standard particle meshing, with the powerful OpenVDB frame work. With a streamlined workflow for meshing using their filtering system, you can generate smooth flowing surfaces. The Meshing isn’t only for particles, it can also be used as a remesher for polygon objects.

Raina Wu, a rigging artist at DreamWorks, presented a tool that can speed up work in Maya when it comes to creating dynamic ropes, chains, hair, tails, tentacles, fins and more in a rig. The tool is called DynaRigBuilder and it’s something else. The tool constructs an nHair-based dynamic rig in Maya that could be used for animating character hair, ropes and other things. Raina Wu, a rigging artist at DreamWorks has shared DynRigBuilder, a tool that allows artists to build a nHair-based dynamic rig in Maya that could be used for animating character hair, rope, etc.

Auto-Rig Pro is an advanced automatic rig setup for Blender, for biped and quadrupeds.
It includes several tool to quickly position the bones on the character model, based on a body recognition solver.

Rig fast with the Smart feature: The smart tool will automatically find the body parts location, then edit the result if needed, place the facial bones and other extra limbs then generate the final rig.
Modular: Customize the rig definition in a few clicks: fingers, toes amount, spine bones, tail, breasts, ears, duplicate or remove limbs to rig spiders, centaurs, or whatever
Remap: The Remap feature allows retargetting of any armature action to another one, with different bone names and bone orientations, supporting imported .bvh/.fbx armatures for example. Define the source armature, the target armature, and the animation will retarget according to the bones names matches and bones original orientation.
Game Engine Export: Auto-Rig Pro allows export to FBX format via a dedicated module, making possible to use the rigged avatar in Unity or Unreal Engine. Shape keys are transferred as well. Two export types are supported: generic to export any characters and creatures, or humanoid to keep a human bone hierarchy, allowing animation retargetting inside game engines. The bend bones and full facial rig are now exportable along both types.
Secondary Controllers: For cartoon effects, bending, stretching, or fine pose sculpting, the secondary controllers are the indispensable tool. Use it instead of corrective shape keys, or as a complement. Below a typical leg bent before and after tweaking the secondary controllers.

Vegetation Generation Tool for Houdini

Marta Ferian has just shared a Vegetation Generation tool for Houdini, the Digital Asset implements the space colonization algorithm by Runions et al (2007). The asset can be used to easily produce natural tree structures allowing control over the growth by shaping the roots, the foliage and the way the tree fills up the space.

Repository structure:
• Asset: contains the .hda for the Tree generator tool
• Report: both .lyx and .pdf of the final report. The folder code contains every VEX snippet used in this project
• Production: scene example files for the tree tool, as well as a transcript of the helpcards (folder helpcard) and the script callbacks (folder modules)
• Wekan: trello-like board used throughout the project to organize tasks

Skin Selection for Blender

Skin Selection is a Blender addon to select the bones controllers based on the meshes surface. It allows to hide all the controllers and work directly with mesh, clearing out the viewport.

Notes:
• The selection may be wrong in ortho mode, switch to perspective mode! (numpad key 5)
• Multiple bones selection is not yet implemented.
• Does not work yet with subsurf modifier in OpenSubdiv mode.
• Bones controllers names must end with a two characters side, eg: "hand.l" or "hand_L" for left, "hand.r" or hand_R" for right side. This allows skin selection to work with mirror modifiers.
• If multiple bones are included in the group, they must be from the same side
• When switching to edit mode, the skin selection will stop.

This new release comes with a hybrid feature of Vray. It also comes with new dedicated hair and skin shaders, a new dedicated camera, a library of over 300 ready-to-use materials, and an overall improvement in the rendering speed.

Mental Ray v1.2 for Maya 2018

The version 1.2 update of the NVIDIA Mental Ray for Maya Plugin has just come out, and the corresponding mental ray Standalone. This update introduces support for NVIDIA's new Volta GPU generation, thus it's based on the new CUDA 9.That means, it will continue to work with the older GPU generations Pascal, Maxwell, and Kepler. The update also fixes a lot of known issues, and improves rendering performance especially for GI Next.

Updates and Changes in Mental Ray v.12:
• Added support for Maya 2018.
• Fixed possible crashes when switching from mental ray Viewport to Viewport 2.0 and modifying camera or scene after that.
• Fixed possible missing color transform when exporting to .mi file or when rendering with satellite hosts. Note: in some corner cases, color profile for the camera may still be missing.
• Invalid file paths in mentalrayTexture nodes can now be re-pathed using the File Path Editor.
• Fixed possible SynColor color management issue, in particular when using mental ray for Maya plugin with Maya 2017 Update 4.
• On Mac OSX and Linux platforms, fixed possible issues with user-local paths MDL materials.
• When rendering on a machine without CUDA-capable GPU, GI Next indirect illumination falls back to CPU. Erroneously, if rendering was done with satellites which had CUDA-capable GPUs, GPU acceleration on satellite was disabled as well. This is fixed now.
• resources.py script is renamed to mr_resources.py, in order to avoid conflict with other Maya packages.
• For Maya 2017 Update 4, fixed default port used for satellites in mental ray shelf’s Resource Management dialog.

Wayfinder for After Effects

Paul Conigliaro has shared a new script for After Effects - Wayfinder, the script allows you to Attach and guide layers along shape layer paths, shape generators, or even complicated animated shape layers.

Select your shape layer, press a button, and get nulls attached to the outline of the shape! Each null has controls for position and offset. The main shape layer gains controls for trim and offset. You can also select existing layers to attach them directly. Continue animating the shape layer after the layers have been attached!

Highlight features:
• Create a draw-on or trail effect
• Set up several layers follow each other along the same path
• Easily create complicated motion paths from shape modifiers like twist, zig-zag and more
• Animate and change the shape as other layers are guided along it.

How to use Wayfinder:
• Select or create a shape layer. Make sure to already have any shape modifiers like Zigzag, Twist, etc. already applied.
• Enter the number of points you want attached or select existing layers in the order you'd like them attached.
• Check "Hide Calculation Layers" to shy the layers created to calculate points along the shape. These aren’t used for animation.
• Click “Attach Layers.”
• Animate the original shape layer… Layers stay attached!
• Note: To orient layers to the shape, the layer must be moving and have “Auto Orientation” set to “Orient Along Path”.

Erik Lehmann - Double Negative senior has released 3 Free tools to automate or simplify your workflow in Autodesk Maya.

Compact Renamer: Renames the selected object(s). The tool includes Prefix, Suffix,   automatic serialization, padding, and a search / replace function.

Selection Tools
  1. Select Bad Geometry v1.0
  Check your mesh and select Triangles, Quads, N-Gons, Concave and Lamina faces, Holes and Non-Manifold issues.
  2. Select By Component Count v1.0
  Automatically search and select geometry with the same face, vertex, edge, triangle or UV count.
  3. Select Groups v1.0
  Select all groups in the scene or in your current selected hierarchy.

UV Tools
  1. UV Transfer v1.0
  Transfer UVs from one to several other objects.
  2. UV Checker Pattern v1.0
  Check if your UVs are properly unfolded, oriented and equal in size.
  Create, assign, remove and delete a UV shader with a custom 1k texture map.
  Set UV texture tiling from 1-32k.

The script allows us to add and edit 3D objects directly within Adobe Illustrator CC 2017. You can also apply your label artwork to 3D packaging or incorporate 3D elements seamlessly into your 2D artwork. In this video, Dimitris Katsafouros explains to us how the plugin works.
