VolumeBreaker: paint and smash
VB Clustering gives you the flexibility to set fragment particles into different breakage cluster and make them appear more natural or have specific patterns.
The introduction of a breakable map allows for more creativity in deciding which areas should undergo a destruction. Procedurally-created volumeBreaker cells can be now merged with an existing raster to get a more homogenous look to the fragments.


ShapeNoise: deformation at your command!
Call it procedural deformation if you will, with this new addition, ShapeNoise Operator gives you the power to add a deformation to any particle shape’s area and edges. This operator offers many features to control and modify how a particle shape (mesh) can be displaced or changed in a way that enhances the look and feel of a VB broken mesh debris, right to each and every particle. While the main function of this operator is to work in conjunction with volumeBreaker, it may also be used with any type of particle mesh including fluids or instanced geometry.


FlowEmitter: consistency and flexibility in fluid effects
FlowEmitter resolves a current effects challenge in the market, that is how to achieve constant flow of fluid particle effects in an animation. With TP 6.5’s FlowEmitter, even with changes in the rate of particles generated, constant flow is now achieved, while preserving the distance between each particle. Visually, the FlowEmitter gives producers and the VFX artists a quick and powerful operator to create and modify realistic flowing or pouring effects in liquid simulations.


ParticleLight: Omni lighting with shadows
PLight - for a visual artist, lights play an important role in any animation or visual effects setup. Controlling lights is key to making awesome shots and creating depth and character in visuals. Now, thinkingParticles 6.5 will give you the power to control lights in a 3d scene, in more than one way. The PLight Operator can turn any particle into a real Omni light type along with proper shadow casting.
There are several amazing helpers attached to PLight for fast and easy controls including ColorGradient, a useful node to control lights and materials through procedural setups. You can also control the light animation or distribution with distance and velocity values.


HydroField flow ‘collisions’ and realistic foaming effects
ThinkingParticles 6.5 enhanced HydroField means more Fluid and Rigid Body ‘collisions’ with much better buoyancy and interaction. Physically-accurate transfer of momentum between fluid particles and rigid bodies is resolved and can be seen in real time simulation. The enhanced Multi-Physics Objects engulfed within a fluid will start to rise or sink depending on their specific physical properties, and all these values are adjustable in more than several ways.
HydroField is also enhanced with a new impact behavior for splashes. Splashes can now be used to create Hydrofield surface interactions and splash particles can be used to add volume to a Hydrofield.

Solid Angle releases major Arnold 5.0 update with improved performance and new shaders, bundled with 3ds Max 2018.

Highlight Enhancements in Arnold 5.0:

• Shaders:
- Standard Surface: a new standard_surface shader was added, with intuitive and energy conserving parameters, a secondary specular coat with separate normal, metallic Fresnel, thin surface support and more. The standard shader is still available but considered deprecated.
- Standard Hair: a new physically based standard_hair shader was added, with much more accurate specular and transmissive scattering, better diffuse scattering for dirty hair, melanin randomization, and simple and intuitive parameters. The older hair shader is still available but considered deprecated.
- Standard Volume: a new standard_volume shader was added, usable for rendering a wide variety of volumes. The shader provides independent control of density, scattering color and transparency, in a way that is energy conserving by default. Fire can be rendered using blackbody emission driven by temperature. Displacement can be used to add more detail to volumes. This supersedes the density volume shader, which has been removed.
- Utility shader: the utility shader has been enhanced with a new metal shading mode, and a roughness control has been added that affects plastic and metal modes.
• OSL, Closures and AOVs:
- Open Shading Language: shaders can now be written in Open Shading Language, an advanced shading language for production GI renderers. OSL shaders placed in the shader search path are automatically registered as Arnold shader nodes, with their parameters converted to Arnold parameters. Once loaded, they can be inspected, instantiated and linked in exactly the same way as C++ shaders. OSL shaders can be used to implement texture patterns and materials using closures
- Closures: a new closure parameter type has been added, which shaders can output instead of final colors. There are BSDF, BSSRDF, emission, matte, transparency and volume closures. See the API documentation and examples for more details on how to use these. Linking a color to a closure parameter will automatically create an emission closure with that color. A closure parameter however can't be linked or converted to a color, as the integrator only computes lighting after shader evaluation.
- Light group AOVs: surface shaders now natively support light group AOVs, previously this feature was only available for volume shading.
- Light path expressions: light path expressions are used to write lighting components into separate AOVs. No longer should individual shaders define AOVs for direct/indirect light and various layers, rather a regular expression syntax is used to define the subset of all scattering and emission events in the scene that should be written to each AOV. Built-in AOVs are available for the common cases.

• Color Management
- Linear color spaces: any linear color space can now be specified through the color manager for any output driver that supports halfs or floats.
- Color Managers: custom color_manager nodes can now be implemented to handle input and output color transforms. A color manager is a package similar to SynColor or OpenColorIO. If no color manager is specified in options.color_manager, Arnold will use the built-in one which supports linear (no transform), sRGB and Rec709 (non linear)

• Sampling
- Dithered sampling: most samplers (e.g. soft shadows, indirect illumination, depth of field) will now take advantage of dithered sampling, which improves the visual distribution of noise specially at low sample rates.
- Quad lights: sampling has been improved, reducing noise for surface lighting. For comparisons with the previous sampler, options.enable_new_quad_light_sampler can be disabled.
- Cylinder lights: sampling has been improved, significantly reducing noise for cylinder lights in volumes or where cylinder lights are located near other surfaces.
- Disk lights: a novel sampling algorithm has been implemented for disk lights which can greatly improve their rendering quality when shading points near the disk's surface, particularly in volumes

• Rigging: Lab 1.5.0 implements the twist bones as part of the standard skeleton. Vertex weights are improved for neck and lower arm.

The RealTraffic Simulator plugin gives the ability to populate and animate automobiles for city and street scenes. With this plugin, realistic traffic scenes can be managed under the three vital aspect of Vehicles, Control and Road networks. The plugin was developed by the TU Dresden team and uses an Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), that simulates human-like driving behaviors. The IDM is complemented by the lane change model MOBIL (Minimizing Overall Braking Induced by Lane changes), that provides voluntary and forced lane changes where braking maneuvers are reduced to a minimum.

Features
•Vehicles
In the first release, RealTraffic provides four different types of vehicles, cars, trucks, buses and trams, which can be freely configured in size and number of axles. Additionally, any number of trailers can be added so that it is possible to easily create semi-trailers, trucks with trailers, articulated buses or multi-carriage trams. Using the free Car Rig Helper and the automatic setup function there are just a few mouse clicks from downloading the car model to the final RealTraffic vehicle. The simulation not only controls the vehicle components, i.e. chassis and wheels, but optionally also brake lights and turn signals as well as light signals from traffic lights.
•Roads
With the help of splines, lanes are generated and linked with nodes. Nodes define branches or merging lanes. This way, very complex road networks can be modeled. For creation, the functions of the plugin or the CINEMA 4D spline tools can be used. Lanes can be blocked or allowed exclusively for individual vehicles, e.g. to define the tracks for the tram or separate bus lanes.
•Control
The traffic volume for each vehicle type is defined by traffic volume objects. Any number of traffic volume objects can be used to define different volumes in different directions (e.g. rush hour on outbound lanes). The vehicles are taken from the pool you provide and automatically emitted at the starting nodes. The cars find the route to the destination nodes autonomously even if there is no direct connection. Optionally, required vehicles are automatically cloned to meet the desired traffic volume. RealTraffic can handle the traffic without collision by just using the priority ranking of crossing lanes. In addition, the nodes can act as a stop sign or traffic light. The traffic lights are controlled by special objects being able to manage any number of light signals.
